Room very comfortable and well appinted, breakfast excellent, service second to none. Dinner in "The Avenue" fussy, over-presented and hugely expensive. Quality of food was good but would have been far more appreciated with less "design" and more food.

Visiting daughter at the university. Always love visiting Winchester. Found some wonderful walks this time along the river and also a good walk up Saint Catherine's Hill with views all across Winchester and further afield. Wonderful pubs and vibrant atmosphere.

We have grown to love Hampshire so much as the people there...
We have grown to love Hampshire so much as the people there seem the most lovely wherever we go. We went to the Jane Austin House and I said this to a lovely man who was one of the curators and he said 'that is Hampshire people and that is why we moved here'. Winchester itself is beautiful not just the Cathedral or Great Hall or the Mill but spending an hour or so sitting outside one of the many establishments watching the world (and their dogs - we've never been anywhere where there were so many dogs and we argued which we should get). We both work hard but upon arrival we just completely relaxed. Other recommendations the Bangkok Bistrot restaurant in Jewry Street (we also saw the Grayson Perry Exhibit in the same Road), the Sunday morning antiques and retro and other market - I bought two wonderful things I will cherish, but above all the happiness everyone exuded, we will be back. This trip was short but there is so much to see (and also so many of my favourite shops, more than actually accessible in where I live in Kensington but in Winchester all in the high street - the White Company, Hobbs x 20!)
As you can tell we fell in love with Winchester!!

Winchester is a delightful place to visit.
Winchester is a delightful place to visit. It blends the old with the new extremely well. The cathedral has to be seen inside. A guided tour is available which is essential to appreciate fully the cathedral's remarkable history.
Further attractions are the wide range of excellent restaurants and pubs, museums and historic buildings.
Querky rooms as you would expect if you have read the other reviews - the look on our friends faces when they were given the key to 'Cell 2' was a picture as we had kept them in the dark as of the location. The full English for Breakfast was very tasty and served with a smile. If walking into Winchester and I suggest that you take the opportunity then follow the river walk close to the hotel it is a beautiful walk with plenty of seats. We don't often come this way but if we do then we would have no hesitation stopping here again.
This is a great hotel for easy access into Winchester, the rooms have everything you need, excellent bed and bedding, shower is amazing with good pressure. Complimentary tea, pod coffee machine coffee, biscuits an hot chocolate. The only thing I wonder is why the bathrooms do not close from the outside. Staff are friendly and professional and nothing is to much trouble. When my dog stays with me here they will provide, dog bed, bowls, treats and even a ball!
Excellent hotel that I highly recommend.
Beautiful hotel in a perfect location for visiting Winchester. Our room was fantastic with a very comfortable bed, large bathroom and view into the courtyard. We chose the half board dinner and breakfast option. The dinner included two courses with many choices some of which required paying extra. As you would expect, there was an interesting wine list. The breakfast buffet also offered your choice of freshly cooked eggs, my husband enjoyed the full English while I loved my eggs Benedict.
The room is quite large and although the furniture was a bit tired looking, the room itself was spotlessly clean and the bed was very comfortable. We very much appreciated the high quality bed linen.
The loction is superb, we loved the view of the winchester cathedral.
The hotel staff, without fail are welcoming and the buffet breakfast is vast and varied. In fact, rare are the hotels that offer so many milk options for their clients! (Oat milk, soya milk, skim milk, full fat milk...)
the hotel is perfectly positioned to visit Winchester, it is a high standard hotel with extensions for rooms to the original building, restaurant looks superb ( didn't actually use it)and nice handy bar. the reception staff were excellent friendly and welcoming. the rooms are of a decent size and standard though some of the fittings are a little tired, but saying that cannot fault the cleanliness and layout, the million dollar question would we go back - yes.
We had several rooms (all across the street from the main hotel). Single rooms are small but adequate. A double room was luxurious for this type of inn. The location is super, just outside of the old town wall and a short walk from the cathedral and town center. Very good breakfasts. We enjoyed a guided tour of Winchester College ( a school with more than a passing resemblance to Hogwarts) and walks along the small river that are near Wykeham Arms.
A big Winchester house not far from the center - so convenient and easy to reach. Delightful hosts and my room was better serviced than a hotel. Great range of drinks and snacks and beautifully decorated.. Well lit (which is not always the case) and very easy access. - I simply needed a bed f,or the night and that is what I got but I was sad I couldn’t spend a little longer enjoying the calm !
Location great. Staff phoned us to confirm we were on our way and gave precise directions to the hotel. Very convenient for the city and car park. Breakfast was superb. Room was clean as was the well-fitted ensuite. Slightly quirky hotel (which I loved) was based on an old prison. This theme continued throughout including the dining area and bedroom with an authentic-looking door.
We used the spa everyday, and found it very clean, I liked being able to dress for swimming in our room and wear a robe to the spa.
Breakfast was a good quality buffet.
Winchester is a lovely old city with lots of eateries and old buildings of interest especially the cathedral. We could walk from the hotel to the city centre in about 10 to 15 minutes
Great place to stay - very central but parking available though it may require a walk as it is largely street parking but a big plus in central Winchester.
we booked the 2 bed apartment which is detached from the hotel and is really a 3 storey house - excellent and well appointed, provided you are happy with stairs. Staff very friendly and helpful.
When I booked this I was told it was on the M3 at Winchester. When I got there I found it was nearer to Basingstoke . It’s a ridiculous scenario to have to drive so far out of the way north bound and then all the way back southbound to get to the hotel. The taxi from fair oak was £58. I was shocked beyond belief!
We enjoyed the stay at the Winchester Royal Hotel. It is a fun historical hotel and we enjoyed our room in the old part of the hotel with all the twists, turns, and steps to get to the room. Our room was clean and the bed comfortable. About a 10 minute walk from the train station.
It is very close to the downtown area of Winchester and close to the train station. Five minute walks. Beautifully maintained, and Esme is a superb host. So comfortable. We will definitely us it again for our regular visits to Winchester.
Ideal location for the Winchester Science Museum and Planetarium. Comfortable bar and hotel lobby areas. Excellent breakfast. Very friendly staff both at reception and in bar and restaurant.
Quiet, beautiful rural location, but within easy reach of Winchester. Rooms and bar/restaurant had simple character, thoughtfully decorated. Staff very friendly and helpful. Breakfast tasty.
